A cinema-cartography from the Global South

This research circumscribes a field tentatively named cinema-cartography, in which the way of thinking cinema and the way of thinking cartography are connected through a critical reflection of positions from the global South, based on the hypothesis that straight lines would synthesize modern thought western. Strategies are investigated and implemented in audiovisual practices that critically relate films and maps, aiming to discuss methodological experiments, in a procedure to map-film-think-write, with a view to thinking about a problem in cinema from the global South
Cartographies of the displacements of urban territories: a collective and collaborative reading on power relations on Brazilian highways (2019-2022)
In the analysis of the state of the art of representations in contemporary urbanism, from the perspective of displacements, we found the emergence, between the 1960s and 1980s, of readings based on the morphology of roads (Appleyard, Lynch, Myer, 1965); the forms of communication and symbolism of the commercial corridor (Venturi, Scott Brown, Izenour, 1977); proposals for inserting a perspective of speed based on walking (Cullen, 1960); and the tripartite systematization of thought in architecture, formed by space, event and movement (Tschumi, 1980). After this period, due to the hegemonic bias, there is a need to update the field of urbanism, mainly from approaches that, from the cartographic, technological and representational turn of the 1980s, incorporate such dimensions. To set up devices for such research, we cut out an empirical object with intense and complex relationships between flows, movements and permanences both in their physical-territorial and immaterial aspects: the highways, seen from the internal perspective of the great dominant cartographic systems, notoriously, those linked to Google.
